More and more Germans suffer from sleep disorders

With some people who have not found restful sleep at night, the following day shows a significantly reduced performance. Around 7.4 million Germans are now affected by sleep disorders and the tendency is increasing.

This is due, among other things, to the increasing stress at work, which many employees deal with at home even after work. The problem is often not recognized or handled incorrectly. But constant availability and increasing shift work also play their part, said the chairman of the German Society for Sleep Research and Sleep Medicine (DGSM), Alfred Wiater, in Wiesbaden. At the DGSM annual meeting, around 2,000 doctors, scientists and practitioners discussed new knowledge.

Frequently wrong treatments Society has to shell out as much for the economic consequences of lost working hours and previous pensions as for medical treatment, said Wiater. However, many people affected are often treated incorrectly, said Hans-Günter Weess, an expert in falling asleep and staying asleep. In most cases, patients receive medication that does not fight the psychological causes and is also addictive. Behavioral therapies promise greater success. Sleeping disorders should not be underestimated, because they are a risk factor for overall health, according to conference president Richard Schulz. Nocturnal breathing pauses can cause high blood pressure, which puts you at greater risk of heart attacks or cardiovascular disorders. However, new therapies with night-time mask ventilation promise success, said Schulz. (fr)
