Science Council recommends an academization of the health and nursing professions

Because due to the advancement of medicine and demographic change, a regular technical school qualification in the care landscape is often no longer sufficient, the Science Council believes that trainees in nursing professions should be able to specialize in the future by means of a university degree. At least that is what the Science Council, as an advisory body to the Federal Government, proposes. The medical community is rather cautious about the ideas.

After the nursing high school diploma, the nursing bachelor should now also follow if it is up to the ideas of the Science Council. Instead of training only at the nursing school, nurses should also have the opportunity to complete a university degree. The German Medical Association reacted cautiously to the proposals. It advocates maintaining the existing and pooling competencies.

According to the ideas of the Science Council, health professions should also be academic in the future. Although physical and occupational therapists or nurses for the elderly or nursing should not have a university degree in the future, some should be given the opportunity to acquire more specialist knowledge due to the increasing demands in the medical field.

Up to 20 percent of graduates with academic titles
The Science Council assumes that up to 20 percent of a year in therapy, midwifery and nursing can complete a bachelor's degree at a university. However, between 2700 and 5500 new study places would have to be created for the nursing professions alone, as Professor Hans-Jochen Heinze, neurologist and chairman of the Medical Committee in the Science Council, said in Berlin on Monday.

At least 1,100 new study places would have to be available for the therapeutic professions and 50 places would be sufficient for midwives. The expert was unable to provide precise information about the costs. "In any case, it will definitely be expensive," said Heinze.

Countries responsible for study places
The individual federal states are responsible for creating new study places. The Conference of Ministers of Education was open to the suggestions made by the Science Council. When asked, a spokesman emphasized that the Council's proposals were "taken very seriously". The state ministers of culture want to discuss this later this year.

Medical advances and an aging society make a university branch of conventional health careers necessary, according to the Science Council. Due to the demographic development, people are getting older and the content-related tasks in the nursing sector are also growing. "People are getting older and are therefore more and more chronically ill," emphasized Heinze. Nurses and nurses are facing increasingly complex requirements. It is necessary that "one's own work can also be checked based on evidence". The Council argued that academic training is needed for such tasks.

"Do not qualify away from the care bed"
Nurses should not, however, "be qualified from the nursing bed," emphasized Heinze. However, leading practitioners could work in multiprofessional teams and thus relieve doctors.

The proposals were received very cautiously by the German Medical Association (BÄK). The Deputy Head of the Medical Association Dr. Max Kaplan warned of further fragmentation of the supply landscape. This could happen with a further level of care through non-medical, academic nursing professions. Instead, “multi-professional cooperation” should be concluded on the basis of the existing, in order to bundle and promote existing skills. (sb)
