Every third baby is born by Caesarean section.

(18.08.2010) The evaluation of the insured person data by the KKH alliance showed that in Germany around every third child is born by Caesarean section.

In a nationwide comparison, Saarland is at the top of the statistics with approx. 37 percent, closely followed by Lower Saxony, where approx. 36 percent of births are performed by Caesarean section, according to the results of the KKH alliance. The lowest proportion of births were Caesarean sections in Saxony-Anhalt (26 percent) and Saxony (24 percent).

One reason for the increase in caesarean sections could be the increasing number of high-risk pregnancies, since the number of pregnancies has increased massively among women over the age of 40, the experts explained. For example, women between the ages of 40 and 41 alone had around 41 percent more pregnancies than in 2004. In addition, more and more women voluntarily opt for a caesarean section because they fear complications in natural birth. Because the safety requirements for childbirth have also increased further, another cause for the increased number of Caesarean sections must be sought here. From a statistical point of view, caesarean sections and normal births are roughly the same risk today, but there is clearly a tendency to observe that women prefer the caesarean section despite the lack of medical need.

The number of caesarean sections does not increase because they are easier to plan or economically advantageous in the course of the hospital, explained chief physician Dr. Dietmar Seeger from the Marienhospital in Vechta on request to the Oldenburgische Volkszeitung. However, a spokesman for the AOK counters that, especially from the doctors' point of view, economic reasons for a caesarean section can very well speak. Because if the course is uncomplicated, the caesarean section brings about 500 euros more income than the normal birth. In the opinion of all experts, the most important aspect for the rise in caesarean births is clearly the growing proportion of high-risk pregnancies, which also include all cases of pregnant women over 40 years of age. The caesarean section is about 50 percent among those who give birth later. "Due to the increased number of high-risk pregnancies, caesarean sections are performed more and more frequently," explains Harry Konrad, head of the KKH-Allianz service center in Gießen. “Late-born women bring additional risks more often than young women. For this reason, a caesarean section is more likely, ”continued Konrad. Other factors that may cause a Caesarean birth are: B. multiple births, transverse positions of the child but also very overweight.

Therefore Dr. advises Dietmar Seeger to discuss any concerns about childbirth with the doctor or midwife in detail in order to work out a solution together, which should not necessarily be the caesarean section. Because even if this is a routine procedure today, it can "also result in painful complications such as a wound healing disorder or permanent pelvic pain due to adhesions," Seeger told the Oldenburgische Volkszeitung.

In any case, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the intervention is only medically justified at every seventh birth, and criticism has been growing for years due to the possible problems. Thus, the abdominal incision harbors the risk of infections and vascular occlusions, reduces the prospect of a new pregnancy and increases the risk of problems with future births considerably. And natural childbirth also has advantages for the child: the lungs can get used to the new circumstances better, because the liquid is pressed out of the airways in the narrow birth canal. Various studies have also shown that a caesarean section makes children more susceptible to allergies and asthma. Psychologist Petra Kolip from Bielefeld University also emphasized to the newspaper “Neues Deutschland” that a spontaneous birth is also extremely important for mothers. After a caesarean section, many of them complain that they have not been able to give birth naturally, according to Kolip. (fp)
